Just a quick little update on the Sea Witch….

Sea Witch

January 25th, 2009 by Gerald

Very early stages on this one but here are a few work-in-progress pics of my latest piece.  Still following the aquatic theme after just completing the Atlantis sculpture.

* My sculptures tend to take me around 100 to 200 hours to complete so with only about 20 - 30 hours in this piece I still have a lot to do.

Starting on some of the detail work to test what texture I am going to use (long ways to go but gives an idea of the direction I am headed in)

Atlantis Test

January 20th, 2009 by Gerald

Just a few picture test for the Atlantis sculpture (playing around with different angles and the picture background).  Big thank you to Bryan Thome for doing such an excellent job taking the photos.

The sculpture was hand painted with airbrush and acrylic paints.  The different coloration on the rider’s skin was painted with chalk (pastels).

I’m working on the paint design for my Altantis sculpture now.  Still a work-in-progress but I thought I would show a couple of  pics of what I have so far.

Another Atlantis Update

August 20th, 2008 by Gerald

Quick little update on Atlantis….

I’ve switched gears a little bit and started working again on the female rider.  I still have a bit more that needs to be done to the seahorse.

Atlantis Update

Still working on this one and if I never sculpt a seahorse again it will be too soon ;-).  The detail work can get pretty trival at times but I eventually will finish this sucka!

Playing with Wax

June 15th, 2008 by Gerald

I’ve been wanting to try wax out for some time now so I finally decided to bite the bullet and give it try.  There is a bit of learning curve with wax and the more I play with it the more my comfort level increases with the product.  I did have the same issue when I started sculpting with polymer clays a few years back but over time I learned a lot from the medium.

So far I like it and with a few adjustments here and there I’m making pretty good progress on a new piece.  The specific wax that I am using is called FUSE.  I decided to give FUSE a try because it does have similar properties to polymer clay.  When heated it has a very doughy feel to it and becomes rock hard once it cools.

Haven’t decided on the official name for my new piece but basically it will be centered around the theme of Altantis (probably something like Guardian of Atlantis).  The sculpture is a work-in-progress of a female soldier riding on a giant seahorse.

Enjoy…

Sculpting again - Centaur sculpt

April 23rd, 2008 by Gerald

I took a break from sculpting for awhile so that I could let my batteries recharge (sometimes life gets a little too busy ;-) ).  I’ve picked back up with a sculpt I started last summer and I’m pretty excited to see how this one ends up looking (I usually make things up as I go so my original sculptures never end up looking exactly like the original design/concept).

Right now I’m pretty much focusing on fantasy pieces since that is where my real interest lies.  I have a couple other non-fantasy pieces that I need to finish (cowboy, african woman) but it will probably be awhile till I get around to them.  The fantasy sculptures really get the creative juices flowing so for me that is the main reason why they are such a blast create.

That being said, my latest piece is of a centaur shooting a bow in arrow.  I still have a ways to go on this piece but have included a couple work-in-progress photos below.
